Box Office: "Madagascar 3" Trumps "Rock of Ages" & "That's My Boy"
Continuing its reign atop the movie world, "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" grabbed up the lead at the box office and never looked back over the weekend on June 15-17, 2012.
The DreamWorks animated sequel voiced by Ben Stiller, Jessica Chastain and Chris Rock enjoyed a $9.9 million Friday and a $13.3 million Saturday while ending with a sophomore weekend net of $35.0 million.
Meanwhile, the Ridley Scott directed film "Prometheus" - which stars Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender - also held steady in the runner-up slot thanks to Friday earnings of $5.8 million and an $8.0 million Saturday with a second weekend estimate of $21.0 million.
Rounding out the top five at the box office in estimated totals are a pair of disappointing newcomers in the Tom Cruise/Julianne Hough fronted musical "Rock of Ages" ($15.0 million) and Adam Sandler's comedy "That's My Boy" ($13.0 million), as well as Kristen Stewart's hit fairy tale based film "Snow White and the Huntsman" ($13.0 million).
