The 9 BIG Hollywood Stories of 2009
It has been quite a year in the realm of celebrity gossip, with plenty of drama and action coming out of the entertainment industry. And as 2009 draws to a close, here are some of the biggest stories to come out of Tinseltown.
Tiger Woods’ Many Mistresses - While he ruled the world of professional golf, Tiger Woods was utterly defeated in the relationship department. News of his many affairs with as many as 14 (or more) mistresses has landed the golf stud in hot water with his wife as well as his sponsors. Woods has taken an indefinite leave from the PGA and hopes to reconcile with his wife Elin Nordegren, who has taken their kids to Sweden for Christmas.
Kanye West’s Trampling of Taylor Swift - Sure, he’s had some ridiculous temper tantrums in the past, but Kanye West’s rudeness reached critical mass when he interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. West tried to give Beyonce Knowles props for her “Single Ladies” video even though it didn’t win the award and in the process became an overnight awards show joke. Though he apologized for his transgressions, Kanye ended up canceling a tour due to his fans’ lack of enthusiasm to support him. Meanwhile, Miss Swift went on to win tons more awards and is nominated for 8 Grammys.
Goodbye Michael Jackson - Just as he was mounting a massive career comeback, Michael Jackson passed away suddenly on June 25th. The late King of Pop was preparing for an unprecedented run of shows at London’s O2 Arena when he overdosed on Propofol. Jackson’s family members threw a monumental memorial service for him in Los Angeles and have subsequently released footage of his concert rehearsals in a motion picture titled “This Is It.” Michael’s kids Prince Michael, Paris, and Blanket have also been in the news since their father’s death.
New Moon Mania - While the hype surrounding “Twilight” was huge, rabid fans couldn’t wait for the release of “New Moon” on November 20th. The film opened to huge box office numbers, scoring $26.3 million for its midnight showing and breaking all pre-sale box office records. Stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner all experienced major career boosts with new film roles, and have been in negotiations with the “Twilight” producers for a double “Breaking Dawn” feature to end out the franchise. Rumor has it, they’ll be making a killing to appear in the final two films.
Rihanna Takes a Beating from Chris Brown - While most top-selling singers were attending the 2009 Grammy Awards, Rihanna was recovering from being beaten up by her boyfriend Chris Brown. The “Umbrella” babe and her beau got into a physical fight while driving around Hollywood in a Lamborghini and Rihanna ended up with a bruised face, black eyes, and a split lip. The pair broke up following the fracas and Brown was sentenced to probation with community service. Chris also released a video in which he pleads for forgiveness, though his career had taken a hit. Conversely, Rihanna put her strife into song and has a hot-selling new album called Rated R.
John Travolta’s Son Dies - He’s always been a family man, so when John Travolta’s son Jett passed away in January, it was a crushing blow to the “Face/Off” actor. Jett suffered from a seizure disorder and was found dead in the bathroom of the Travolta family vacation home in the Bahamas. To add insult to injury, two Bahamian men (a politician and a paramedic) teamed up and tried to extort money from Travolta following the tragedy. John also started a charity in memory of his late son.
Jon and Kate No More- Perhaps two of the most-read names in 2009 were Jon and Kate Gosselin. Their TLC reality show “Jon and Kate Plus 8” was hugely successful and things were looking promising for the family. Kate scored some extra income with a bestselling book and the family moved into a $1.3 million house in Reading, Pennsylvania. Then Jon began having numerous affairs and it all went downhill from there. Their TLC show has been cancelled (Kate Plus 8 never made it off the ground) thanks to Jon’s sudden epiphany that being on TV was bad for his kids. Jon and Kate’s divorce was finalized last week. And now Jon is facing major lawsuits from the network for breach of contract. Oh yeah, and his girlfriends have all left him high and dry.
Hollywood Babes Burglarized - Just because they’re famous, doesn’t mean Hollywood celebrities are immune to crime. And Paris and Nicky Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Orlando Bloom, Audrina Patridge, and Rachel Bilson found out the hard way that burglars like to target famous people. The burglars included 19-year-olds Nicholas Prugo, Diana Tamayo and Courtney Leigh Ames, and 27-year-old Roy Lopez Jr. All four were charged with felony burglary.
Brittany Murphy Goes Too Soon - Last, but not least, the year came to a close with the shockingly sudden loss of actress Brittany Murphy. Miss Murphy suffered from full caridac arrest on the morning of December 20th. With a Christmas Eve burial, the "Clueless" actress will sorely be missed after passing away at the young age of 32.
